Railway ancestors

I have several ancestors who worked for the Railways in the 1900.
Anyone any ideas where i could look to find employment records?
They all lived in the Lancashire area.What would the railway be British Rail?
All help and suggestions welcome

Lancashire is quite a wide area with several railway companies. Wherabouts in Lancs are we looking. Main line railway would probably be LMS.

Researching:
Liverpool (Cartwright, Chambers, Miller), Todmorden (Sutcliffe, Mallison), Abergavenny (Watkins, Prosser)
