Thought I would pass this fantastic website address on that a very kind lady called Tina past to me. It is great for researching for information on relative who were sailors/mariners etc, can give you quite a bit of information and if you look, there are links to other sites which are also very helpful and interesting.

On the subject of Mariners, there is another useful site - the Lloyds Captains Register. The documents are held at the Guildhall Library - not online, but the index is. I found it really useful for confirming that my ancestors actually were master mariners - they are always missing from the census so its hard to pin them down! Not all names have been completed, including those begining R, S, T - which I why I didn't mention it yesterday
