Hi everyone,

I just have a bit of a confusing query and am hoping some of you could come up with a reason for this.

I have the image of the marriage of a David McPherson to Agnes Christieson on 19.01.1846 in DUNFERMLINE Fife Scotland.

On 31.12.1851 their son David was born in Montrose and the record is as follows: David McPherson Labourer and Agnes Christieson unmarried had a son born on 30 December 1851 baptised and named David.

I am just a bit confused why one record states they were married in 1846 and then by 1851 they were not married. The record does not say they are divorced etc. Agnes then married a Robert Cobb in 1856 in Montrose and declared herself a spinster.

Is there a way can find out if they were divorced prior to David's birth? I have seen other certificates where they have written to whom they were previously married and subseuently divorced.

Has anyone come across this before?

Quite possibly two completely different couples - neither are uncommon names
