Late registrations & possible births abroad?

Hi Maggi

The GRO birth register is only for live births in England and Wales. In order for him to be listed in the GRO index he would have had to have been born in either England or Wales.

Northern Ireland and Scotland keep their own birth registers.

I'd say your father was registered late and that's the reason why he's been added at the bottom of the index.

Sometimes if there is an amendment (like adding another name) you will see it hand written at the bottom of the page. Any amendments made super cede the original birth entry and only the amended birth certificate will be issued.

I always found GRO to be brilliant in answering any queries by email.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Gerry

Mums was added in pen at the bottom of the page she would have been on but she also appears in the 1956 bit as well with a s/49 by it.

Thank you for your replies.
Kenzie, what confused me was that his original registration was added at the bottom - implying that he wasn't actually registered at his birth - which is a possibility, but I wonder if there is a possibility he was born abroad and registered when he came back.
Dad was brought up by my gran and a man he occasionally saw and called 'dad', who I have since found out was a very close friend of the family, and already married!
His original registration has his surname the same as my grans maiden name - so she wasn't claiming anyone as his father.
I haven't got his birth certificate yet - must do that ASAP. May have the actual date he was registered.

If you contact the reg office where you got the birth cert they might be able to explain what it means

Hi, my mums appears twice as does her brothers. She was also adopted. Her adoption 'birth cert' is in the adoption records not the birth records. Her two appearances in the birth records are due to her mum not reg; her when she was born. So to enable her to be legally adopted she needed to exist. So she is recorded in '56 and an amendment, written recording is wrote on the bottom of the page of where she should have been if reg when born, which was in '49.
My uncles is similar but he wasn't adopted but who ever reg him got the place of birth wrong and it was recorded with place name changed

His registration(s) are hand written at the bottom of the page of the general register, once under his mother's name, and once under his adoptive name.

At the bottom of what page?

you only go into birth registers one - in your birth name, adoptions are recorded in a seperate place, the adoption register

My dad was adopted in 1940 aged 14.
I found his adoptive registration added to the bottom of the page - understandable as this was obviously added after.
Through the help of people on here, I found his original registration - under his mother's maiden name.
However, what is confusing, is that his has also been added to the bottom of the page, which implies that this registration was also added some time later.
If dad was born abroad at that time, would he have to be registered here when he came back?
