If you add details manually to your GR the on-screen validation requires you to enter a birth place. Some people enter the word 'Unkown' or similar.

If you upload a gedcom, you can always leave it blank. I haven't tried Claire's emathematical explanation, though.....!

There was another thread a few days ago which made me smile - members had commented that the Hotmatch Program was matching Mary Unnkown b 1845 with similar 'Unkown's in other trees.....! It must work then.

I think at one time if I wrote Null the place of birth was left blank. Perhaps this is because Null means "a zero value in several branches of mathematics" (I Googled)

Hi Claire,

I realised it must mean 'no idea where they were born' but wondered if the
null was abbreviated. I just write unknown or ? myself.

Most of my family have been a nightmare to trace back. Some surnames are spelt wrong. Even if the people could write they obviously didn't check the details were correct Its so frustrating if they decide to name the child
say Florence and then call her Rhoda?? I have another child that is listed on the census as Harriett, the following census states Amy! I cannot find
an Amy or Harriett birth registered on Freebmd. Thank goodness our spelling is better these days.

It means they don't know where the person was born. I've written that for my Great Uncle's wife as trying to find a Mary Thomas born in Wales is a nightmare.

I keep seeing Null as the birthplace in peoples trees.
Please can someone tell me what the abbreviation is.

Many thanks Rose
