Can someone please advise me how and where to find records of WW1 Naval Service? I have tried the National Archive site but have been defeated by it.
I believe my ancestor took part in the Battle of Jutland 1916.
I have his name rank and number also that he was a "prisoner of war in a neutral country" and that he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. His number indicates that he is on the Portsmouth List. This information comes from the Edinburgh Gazette of 8.10.1918
He was on either the Nestor or the Nomad, both of which were sunk.

You need to look on the documentsonline website which you can access via the National Archives site - it appears on the drop down menu on "Search the Archives" on their home page. Then on documentsonline click on Research tools, then click on naval records, then on registers of seamens service, and put his name in! If he's there, you can download his record for £3-50
