The most popular Anti-virus programs are AVG, Avast and Avira, as mentioned. I have AVG both and Avira installed at the moment.

In addition to allowing you to do regular scans, bot these programs also work in what is called resident mode which means that they are permanently running in the background ready to strike if you try and load something suspect.

I am slightly out of favour with AVG at the moment as the latest version does seem to slow things down quite a lot more then the earlier ones.

In addition you also need an Anti- Spyware program such as Spy-bot Search and Destroy or Adaware. Others are Spywareguard and Super Antispyware

I'm with Avira and that seems to be ok, it tells you when theres new downloads, and I've got spyware terminator and zone alarm and they dont seem to be inconflict with each other and they work well for me.
My son reckons I've gone ott but I prefer to have to much than too little

Or you could try Avast, updates daily no problem, I changed from AVG as ended up having lots of problems downloading updates etc and gave up in the end.

Am presently with Norton but due for renewal. Can anyone suggest good free protection sites?
