It could be them. Now which certs do I send off for first? My mind has gone completely blank, any ideas any one?

Could this be the parents marriage or just a longshot?

sorry have had to take son out in car - he's learning to drive - I must have done something terrible in a past life - lol!!

The Barton one is definitely my lot and there is a possibility that Margaret had a second name Jane. So that christening could be mine

I see that by 1871 there was another child William Henry (if the above 1861 is the correct family)

This will possibly be his birth.

ATHERTON William Henry Barton 8c 458

The district Barton is an alternative name for Barton upon Irwell and it is in the county of Lancashire;

As has been said, Margaret and Sarah's births may not have been registered (not compulsory until 1875) but if you buy this one and it turns out to be correct, you will at least find out mother's maiden name.

LancsBMD has 3 Margarets born about same time. One is Pemberton, Wigan in 1858....the others are Hindley and Upholland in 1859.
It's a free site if you want to look.

If you believe the one in 1858 to be correct, the GRO ref is
4th QTR 1858, Wigan 8c/80

Anne Report 7 May 2009 14:27

Sorry yes, Margaret Atherton was born around 1859 and her sister Sarah (middle name possibly Ann) was born around 1856. I have today received an email from GRO saying the cert I had request didn't have Richard as the father - the details were Sarah Atherton 1856/June/Wigan/8c 68

Cynthia

Hi Anne, have you got some dates for us please?

Anne

Anne Report 7 May 2009 14:05

I am tearing my hair out trying to get birth certs for my husband's great grandmothers, they were sisters, Margaret and Sarah Atherton from Wigan (according to census records) and I have their father's name as Richard (according to marriage certs) I have tried to get their birth certs from the GRO but keep coming to a dead end as the father's name isn't right - There are a lot of Athertons from Wigan. Any suggestions would really be appreciated and my scalp would appreciate it too!
