Hi, and thank you for reading my post.

Can anyone please advise me firstly how I can trace where my French Grandmother was born-I have a date of birth in the 1930's, but nothing further to go on.
Also, she died in this country in 1964-any ideas how I can find out where she is burried.
I have no contact with that side of my family.

Regards,

Dylan

hi dylan

i dont know about her birth.

but as for her death do you know were abouts she lived wen she past away you could go to the local library and look at the local news paper

you know what year she past , it should tell you were she was to be buried.

if you give me her birth details i,m going to france in a couple of weeks i could see if i could ask the locals for some advice ,,, and see if i could get a contact address for local registar office..

Hi, this is a difficult one but not impossible.

All births marriages and deaths in France are registered with the Mayor of the departement in which the event occurred and there is no centralised records. However, if the surname is unusual enough you may be able to narrow down which area it was most likely to come from using the french phone book.

http://c.asselin.free.fr/french/yellow_pages.htm#pb

You will have to try each departement and if the surname is common, you probably won't find it.

You may like to read up about french genealogy here

(sorry won't post on one line)

This may give you tips and hints which could help.
Also Ancestry has a french arm at

www.ancestry.fr

Its still in its infancy but I have hopes for it in the future

You could also google your grans surname, you never know, you could end up striking lucky like I did.

Another site which lists members interests is

Just put your grans name in the surname box

Hi Donna, Janet, and Irene!

thank you for your advice.

I will be checking out the websites you have kindly pointed me towards.

My Grandmothers married name was Jacqueline Octavia Billinghurst (nee Caplette). She died 19/11/64 at cottage hospital, Cobham.

If you, Irene, can find anything further out for me I would be very greatful indeed.

Thank you all again,

Regards

Dylan

Now I'm guessing you mean Cobham, Surrey.

A quick google brings up two cemeteries and crematoria in a five mile radius.

Kingston & Surbiton Cemetery & Crematorium Crematoria & Cemeteries

Tel: 020 8546 4462| Bonner Hill Rd, Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey KT1 3EZ

Randalls Park Crematorium Crematoria & Cemeteries

Tel: 01372 373813| Randalls Rd, Leatherhead, Surrey KT22 0AG

There is a small chance that if she were Catholic she may be buried in the local catholic church

Sacred Heart Catholic Church Places of Worship

Tel: 01932 862518| 25, Between Streets, Cobham, Surrey KT11 1AA

And if after phoning these you can't locate your gran, try here

http://www.merton.gov.uk/living/register/cemeteries/othercemeteries.htm

For contact details of cemeteries not run by the council. Council records canbe searched for you but they charge £45

Sorry I have been away on holiday so did not see your reply. I was not aware you had the date of her death. Ancestry states she died age 34 at North Surrey. Irene

thank you to all again who have given me advice.

I have yet to ring round the cemeteries, but will do when I have more time.

Hope you all have a great bank holiday weekend-I'm working!
