Now found Emma age 24 on the 1881 census- listed as married but still no husband!! - A son Harry Powell 4, and Charles 1. It seems her eldest daughter Emma is a visitor with a Bowkes family.

Emma would have been 15 when her eldest daughter was born- so maybe Emma wasn't married at all, or did get married in 1879 after having 2children?

Sorry, thinking out loud now! Back to the seach.

If they didn't marry until 1879, do you think Emma's first daughter (on 1891 census) was from another marriage? OOooh so many questions. I'll go and have a look.

I feel like crying!! This has been swimming around in my brain for so long- and now I have real possibilities.

I cannot find a birth entry in the indexes for Rebecca- can I order a certificate giving approximate dates and parents names (Frederick Powell and Emma Jones)? I'm thinking perhaps her middle name was Rebecca

Gritty

Gritty Report 10 May 2009 17:37

Just another thing- in 1911 Rebecca is living in Moseley St, and have just noticed the 1891 census is listed at Moseley St!! I'm feeling quite positive about this!

Oh Alice- you are a Star!!! I have been going mad seaching for that record- and it confirms that Charles (Charley) is Emma's son- so there is hope that their father was Frederick- may be he was living else where?? I will have to search.

If I can't get anywhere I may just try ordering the death cert suggested by Roy- to see if it fits in with this family.

Many thanks to you both- wonderful

The marriage cert you have may not give her father as deceased but it all depends on what and how the question was asked

Roy- I obviously need to start ordering, but can I just ask- if Frederick had died in 1893, would Rebecca have listed her father as deceased on her marriage?

Yes thanks Roy- thats the 1901 record- I had realised that Charles was not the father- I thought perhaps brother? but I could do with finding this family on the 1891 to confirm it.

Keeping my fingers crossed!

Is this the 1901 census you found?

Name: Rebbecca Powell

Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Charles
Mother's Name: Emma
Gender: Female
Where born: Birmingham, Warwickshire, England

Civil Parish: Balsall Heath
Ecclesiastical parish: St Thomas in the Moors
County/Island: Worcestershire
Country: England

Condition as to marriage:

Employment status: View Image

Registration district: Kings Norton
Sub-registration district: Kings Norton

Charles Powell 22
Emma Powell 46

Lily Powell 15
Thomas Powell 12
Albert Powell 11
Ernest Powell 9
Alfred Gradatt 42
Lizzie Gradatt 10
Alfred Gradatt 9

Charles Powell 22 cannot be Rebecca's Father as he is only 22 years old so something not right their but the image does actually say he is 22 years and head of house plus married, he is married to Emma Powell age46 years and Rebecca's mother? so this could be your family, don't forget the record above is a transcription and there for open to interpretation

the marriage cert you have may not give her father as deceased but it all depends on what and how the question was asked

Hello super detectives- I've got a tricky one that's driving me mad! Have only just started with this family but have already hit problems.

According to her marriage cert (1907 Aston, Birmingham), my Great Gran, Rebecca Powell was living at Lupin St. and was born 1885. Her father was listed as Frederick Powell (job- tube drawer??). I have been told that Rebecca had a sister- Lilian.

I have found a POSSIBLE family on the 1901 census: Rebecca is 17 living in Balsall Heath, Birmingham. However, Frederick is not listed as her father- I wanted to try and find this family in 1891 to see if Frederick is on that - but can't seem to find any of them!

I was hoping that some-one might have a little sniff round to see if they can see this family in 1891. I'm just hoping the problem is me!!
Many thanks
