I have my husbands great grandmother Edith Bartlett on 1901 and 1911 census. I've been told that she went to America after her husband died in 1913. I do know that she died here in the UK because my husband remembers her. I cannot find a death for her and wondered whether she possibly married in the USA and then returned to England with a different name. Is there anyway I can find out?

Thanks

if you know her date of birth and she died 1984 onwards, then you can search the death registers (if you have sub) on ancestry for Edith, with no surname but with dob - I found a distant cousin's real name by doing something similar, we always knew her as Jenny, but her real name was Sarah Jane, so I searched for her surname and dob in death register

if she died before 1984 then its much harder, although perhaps at some point the full index will be transcribed on ancestry as the births now are

Unfortunately she would have died between 1954 - 1962. I've checked and double checked but cannot find the death. This is so difficult.

Thanks

Hi Alice

I've just had a thought. I know that she was living with her daughter and son in law in 1954 so I'll telephone the local library tomorrow and ask them to check the electoral register for me. That will give me her correct name. Don't know why I didn't think of it before. Thank you very much for your kind offer though.
