my gt. grandfather was ships cook for Elder Dempster out of LIverpool circa 1880 -1899 when he died at sea.
Can anyone help me find crew records for this period as it is the only way l can track him back and find his next of kin and where he came from..probably Dominica but all birth records there have been destroyed.
I am desperate and feel this is the ONLY way l can find out about him.

The main source for tracing details of merchant seamen and shipping, especially from the 18th century onwards, are the archives of the Registry of Shipping and Seamen (RSS). These records are held in a number of places. Some are with the RSS in Cardiff, some with the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, some at the Memorial University in Canada, some with the County Record Offices and National Archives of Scotland and Ireland. However, the bulk are held in The National Archives in Kew. The authoritative guides are Records of Merchant Shipping and Seamen by Kelvin Smith, Christopher T Watts and Michael J Watts, and My Ancestor was a Merchant Seaman by Christopher T and Michael J Watts. This also discusses the few records available for earlier periods.
You may also like to look at some of the research guides published by the National Archive at Kew.
