I would appreciate a comment from more expeienced
genealogists on the absence of my husbands grandfather from two consecutive census - 1891 and 1901.

Samuel George Jeffery [only ever referred to as George] b 1886 Dorset Broadwinsor to a single mum
Elizabeth Jeffery b1870,Dorset.He was given the Jeffery surname.Elizabeth,we believe,"died" when George was "young"-no date of death known, but could have been before the 1891 census.George was raised by his maternal grandmother [Elizabeths mum],who by the time of his birth was married to a John Phillips.

In 1891,George and his then family were resident in Dorset,Somerset or Glamorgan.By 1901 George and Grandma Phillips were residents of Glamorgan - Porth/Pontypridd area.We know George worked his first jobs in Welsh rail yards and then mines around the Porth/Pontypridd area-he told us of his "adventues" prior to his death.

I cannot find him in either the 1891 or 1901 census,by looking for Samuel or George or by trying for other spellings of the Jeffery surname. Also looked under the Phillips surname,on the offchance that a census taker may have incorrectly written his surname as Phillips -but cannot find a Mary Phillips with a George on the same census entry.

Is it common for someone/a family to be missing from two census in a row ? Or would the probable cause be incomplete records at the online sites I have
checked ? George's uncle Walter Jeffery and family show up on the 1901 census-indicating that records do exist for neighbourhood where George spent his boyhood.

I would appreciate any comments/suggestions from the GR family.I am a resident of suburban Sydney,Australia.
