Hi Helen,

Thanks for your advice, it does indeed help alot. I have all the references that you mentioned so i will go ahead and order a copy of the certificate from that website.

Many thanks

Stacie

If you have the quarter and year, district, volume and page number as well as one partners name (no need for both) then you can order online here:-
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Make sure that the "Is GRO reference known" button is checked. then you will pay only £7 per certificate.

Depending on when they married you may find a marriage reference for them on www.freebmd.org.uk. Covers up to about 1930 although not complete for the later years.

If you can't find the reference on freebmd then you will need to search the indexes quarter by quarter and year by year (available at main libraries / record offices usually on microfiche or on sites such as Ancestry / Findmypast).

Once you have the reference which will be:
District e.g. Wycombe, volume e.g. 3a, page number e.g. 222
you can order the certificate from the GRO.

It will cost £7, if your ancestors have relatively common names then you may find more than one reference which will fit. You can then give the GRO something to check, e.g. bride's father's name and they will charge £7 for a certificate plus £3 for each reference they check.

Go to www.gro.gov.uk to order certs - do not order on other sites as they often charge a premium over and above the £7.

Hope this helps.

Helen
