Many, many thanks to -
Ann - for reminding me to give the family info so people could check for me!!
Mrs Grumpy - for suggesting familysearch
Jim - for the census info
Quinsgran & Victoria - for their help with the naming patterns (not heard of that before)

You've all really helped and the good news is ....... I think I've found Peter's brother, Thomas (80% certain) & have managed to find who Thomas married so will be able to get marriage cert & find out who their father was.
Will be able to get back to normality now?

Steph - it occurs to me that if this family IS following the English naming pattern - then check and see what they call their first sons - that SHOULD be the name of the father's father. And on that basis the second daughter SHOULD bear the name of the father's mother!!

Happy hunting -

You will have to get the marriage cert of the other Peter Dodd to get his fathers name. Then you can eliminate him.

The 2 Peter Dodd born 1830,31 are submitted entries but do have a batch 7303327

Those English naming patterns are a nuisance sometimes. You can only sort them out by the fathers name.

Google English naming patterns if you dont know how it works

Have you found the other chap on the censuses as well?

Have you looked on the IGI - on the Familysearch site? That might help.

And yes, it's a pain in the butt when this happens. It happened in my family - the one who was a year older turned out to be the uncle of the other one! So your two might be connected as well - in which case you may not be wasting your time tracking them both in the census or even taking a punt on sending off for the birth certs.

well without any names or other relevant information it would be hard to help you - if you put some details up someone may be able to help you solve this

Can anyone help? Trying to trace my Gr, Gr Grandad's father.
I have census info' I know to be correct (including the name of father, mother etc) but have a problem : (
There are two men with the same name and born within a year of each other and even having the same job! I can't find my Gr,Gr Grandad's wedding certificate so can't find out who his father was.
Anyone have any suggestions? This is giving me a headache!
Thanks, Steph
Sorry Ann! My Gr, Gr Grandad was Peter Dodd born Moreton, Cheshire 1830 or 1831. He was a labourer/farm labourer (as was the other Peter, also born Moreton). My Peter was married to Margaret Doyle born 1834 but can't find their wedding cert to prove who their fathers were. Have been to Chester a few times and even seen an 'expert' but still no joy.
