General statutory registration of BMDs began in 1865 (1845 for non-catholic marriages):
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start
(under Ireland, not UK)

Apart from fragments that accidentally escaped destruction, only 1901/1911 censuses are available.

This is probably all too recent for you, and you need to check old parish records, so the key problem for you is which parish?
Without more info, I'ld guess you were stuck.

I will 'nudge' up my thread for you with info about searching for the Irish on the IGI records on the www.familysearch.org/ website.

It is by no means a complete listing of birth/christening records and if the surname is one of the common Irish ones..then you might have some difficulty in pinning any ancestors down.

Worth a look anyway!
