As you probably know, there is no central national register for the UK, and each country looks after its own registers. This model was exported to the USA in colonial times, and each colony/state looks after its own registrations. So, just as in the UK, the most important question is where will the event be registered. Each state has its own peculiarities. Depending on when you're talking about, you may be able to locate them on the most recent national census (1930), or find where their Social Security Number was issued if they appear on the SS death index - e.g.,

could someone kindly tell me how to search for a birth in america as i do not have a clue how to do this would really be appreciated
