Old Bailey is just one court. Local Record Offices also hold many of their local courts' Quarter Sessions records.

However check the archives around Portsea first. Even gaol records may have something.

You'd need to look at court records.

But you'd need to know where the crime was committed.

Was he actually in prison in 1871? Have you found him in 1881?

how would you find out what crime was committed in 1871.. someone in my tree went to portsea prison in portsmouth but i dont know why he was there as he came from huddersfield?
