Does anyone know of any good deals on Ancestry at the moment?

My basic Ancestry UK membership was due for renewal recently. I wanted to try the world membership but simply could not afford it. After speaking to them on the phone, they gave me world membership at 20% discount and also for 13 rather than 12 months. This made the difference between the new yearly subscription I would have had to pay and world membership quite minimal.

The bonus now being is I have access to every ancestry document no matter what or where in the world it is.

Thanks Mick & Heather,

I will give them a ring first to see if they will give me a discount, if not, I will try guidco.

This makes me rather angry to hear that someone can get a 20% discount after speaking to them on the phone whereas someone like myself who is too timid to do so ends up paying full price. One would think that the price of subscription is the price quoted not the price you get after haggling.
Guess I'm just going to have to change my ways and not be so timid. Hard to do at my age!

Margaret

Why get angry? That's almost like saying "If I can't get something, no one else should have it either."

I always haggle when buying something, after all, most sellers of any product realise it's better to make a profit, albeit a smaller profit than none at all. Remember, in this credit crunch, haggling is easier.

Just ask yourself the question, why should you pay a given price just because it's printed on a label? Price reductions are there for the asking. If you don't ask, you don't get.

As for age, I am a pensioner myself.

Go for the cashback then Margaret. You dont have to haggle for that at all and its 25%.

MargaretM Report 19 May 2009 16:58

No, no, that's not what I'm saying. I'm not saying that others shouldn't get a discount, and I certainly don't mind if they do. I' m just saying that when a price is quoted for a subscription it should be "written in stone" and one shouldn't have to haggle for a lower price. As for the quidco, I'm in Canada so can't use it.

Hey, Michael, I'm looking for a good used car. Can I take you with me to haggle?

OK, guys, I'll screw up the courage and have a go at it when my subscription comes up for renewal. I'll say I can't afford it on my pension!

Margaret, If you just buy the UK membership, you should get about 15% off anyway as you don't have to pay their VAT tax thingy. Next year, give Ancestry.com a call, and ask what their UK rate is without VAT.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 19 May 2009 21:38

Oh I don't pay VAT because I'm in Canada. Guess I shouldn't be complaining, eh!
