Kathlyn

I think you could safely presume that it is an empty grave/just memorial.
As indicated by Ozibird he is buried in Tasmania.

My G Uncle was killed/buried in Gallipoli but there is a memorial headstone in the family Plot here in Australia.

Cheers

Hi Kathlyn

There is a protocol that covers what wording can be put on a grave where there is no actual body. I am not sure what it is, how strictly this is is observed although I do know that in Adelaide.......

I would very much doubt that a separate grave would be 'invested' to his memory. It would make more sense to have just some appropriate wording on the other grave. Unless there was a falling out.

It is always possible that the body was embalmed and shipped home. Expensive though - and slow. It still took a very long time to get from Australia to England in them thar days.

I would say it's pretty much a toss-up. Why not contact whoever is responsible for the graveyard, and see what their records say.

Maybe he died in Tasmania but is buried there.

I have found the family grave I was looking for and there are about 7 of the family buried in that large grave, about 15 foot away is the gravestone of another family member with the following inscription:-

DUDLEY FITCH KEMP
Born 5th June 1847
Died 16th March 1903
in Tasmania.

Can I assume !!! this is an "empty" grave to keep the family together. ?
