.......................... originally it meant a freeman versus a tied peasant.

OH's father's family have rented a farm in Yorkshire and farmed it as yeoman farmers for close to 150 years that I have documented, and possibly even further back. The ownership of the land has changed, most recently about 25 years ago, but each new owner seems to have been happy to keep the renters in place!

Could well be a farmer or owner of some land - I know one of my ancestors is described as a yeoman in a legal document drawn up after his death that said his eldest son (a priest) was handing over any rights to the family property to his brother and sister. There are earlier documents showing that the same man (the father) acquired a messuage - which I think is some kind of smallholding - thirty or forty years before.

Thanks Pauline, I'm sure it is the last one, nearly all of my maternal ancestors were farmers. Obviously some were better off than others.. I have been puzzling about it for ages. thanks again Jayne

Several of my ancestors are called yeoman on their marriage certificates, please does anyone know what his means? Jayne
