Said I would shut up - I lied.
Thanks for the above points folks. That does actually make a difference, as I have found out quite a lot of info looking through the pages. Maybe Genes is less flexible then? Would love to know.

Am I right in assuming also that you can't look at a whole enumeration district as you can on Ancestry?

For instance I have researched the village where I live and have have looked at every image from 1841-1901

I have also seen it reported that if you view census images via GR, there is no facility to view previous (or next) page, which can mean missing out on several family members.........

Can't confirm this, as I use Ancestry

Thanks again! Have only just renewed Ancestry but might re-consider next year as all my relatives are resolutely English with a few Welsh folk for luck!

One difference is GR Gold only covers England & Wales where as Ancestry also has the Scottish census.

A word of warning, if you're paying £9.95 & go on to Gold you will then be put on a 6 month contact. If you then decide to cancel Gold, you will then have to pay £9.95 every 6 months

People are always claiming that Genes do not have any census records

OK. What is the problem with it tho? 1881 is free and we all pay for 1911 anyway. Still cheaper than ancestry or findmypast.

I have recently spoken to someone who is adamant she pays £35 a year sub to Genes, and for this gets access to all censuses, including being able to view originals. What is that all about then? Any ideas folks? If it were true wouldn't we all do the same?
Very confused!
