Interesting visit today to a cousin only just found. He told me his mother's birth was never registered, so when she retired (some years ago and she is now dead) it took months to convince the authorities that she was entitled to a state pension. I was able to tell him that her birth WAS registered, but not in the surname of her father - his surname was a middle name and her surname was the surname of the man her mother was married to at the time. If the family had known this, it could have saved a lot of trouble.

Of course, it all works on NI numbers now - but you never know when your research could be useful to a family member.

Incidentally, it was actually a Genes member who found this lady so registered - thanks.
