Thanks mad meg, I'll go see if I can find Dereck. There are so many Joseph Halls around Chappel en Frith, Glossop, and hayfield. The family seemed to be in all those areas at one stage or another. And as for all my Josephs.............sure they did it to confuse me lol

Thanks Jill, I'll keep an eye on the bords. I am still waiting on one film to come in at the mormons, the other one, unfortunately did not show parents names on the christening.

Thanks for your advice, I'll keep watching the look ups.

Joan, I am in Derbyshire. Try Derek who has a thread on here "Who are we looking for in Derbyshire", he might be able to help. (he is a serious researcher, do ask him). But if you are specifically looking at Hayfield, well I am planning on a visit to the graveyard next week. so let me have names and dates and I will see what I can do.

But as you say Woods and Hall are very common names, and especially so around Hayfield. There is a Woods Mills, and lots of other connections.

I purchased the parish records for my local church - St. Mary's in Whitchurch, Cardiff, from the local Family History Society. They only go back to about 1700 though

The Mormon site do not have all their records on line. You could check in their library to see what films they hold. Then hire the films in to view at your local Mormon church. They only charge a couple of pounds and you can view it over a month.

It's also worth asking on the boards for a specific look up for an area, or keep an eye out for people offering lookups. I asked for some lookups on a parish cd a few weeks ago for some of my family. The info was so useful - and I knew there were more people that I wanted from the same parish, that I bought the cd. Well worth it. Anyone with a cd in the area you want would be able to give you an idea of the sort of info it contains - then checking the local FHS site for the price would confirm if it was a good buy or not. Some are much more expensive than others.

Went to their family history centre........unlucky for me, they had not covered the areas I needed. Or some records were incomplete.

That's why i was hoping someone could give me their thoughts on the Bishops Transcripts, and Church Record CDs.

Hi Ann,

I wasn't expecting any "look ups" Just general advice or thoughts about these record CDs . It is going back from the late 1700s, and if I can find the right method, I will be wanting to keep on going back in time.

So it's a how do I do it sort of question.

do you feel like putting details up in case someone can help you?

I am tracing maternal and paternal ancesters, and have hit the same problem with both.

The surnames of both are common.Woods and Hall. With both lots, I am having trouble trying to locate parish or church records. I can not be certain of parishes etc, Just know one lot is possibly South Mimms, the other Hayfeld area Derbyshire.

I can't afford to waste loads of money buying CDs on the of f chance. I have been to the Mormons, no luck. So has anyone any ideas on how I should proceed. What sort of areas do these CDs cover? And how complete are they. Hopefully someone can point me in the direction.
