trying to find father

how is it possible to find information about who the father was if it was not inserted on to records?

ok how would this be done if the mother has passed away? is there other ways of finding out

i was looking at early 20th century but after census mostly how it can be done but i spose if there is a way to find out for modern times that could help to i spose please
