It seems to me that you ought to check the parish records

You can do a "place search" in the LDS FH Library Catalog to find a film #, which you can rent to view at a convenient LDS FHC. Find in centre col of:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

Most of the non-conformists listed are at Derby RO, Matlock, along with the C of E parishes.

The Bishops Transcripts are at Staffs RO, Lichfield.

Also listed is:

Title Births and baptisms, 1785-1836
Authors Independent Church (Matlock) (Main Author)
Notes Microfilm of original records at the London Public Record Office, London.
RG-4 series no. 506

Note Location Film
Births and baptisms, 1785-1836 FHL BRITISH Film 590684 Item 1

Incidentally, Lewis 1848 says:
TANSLEY, a hamlet, in the parish of Crich, union of Bakewell, hundred of Wirksworth, S. division of the county of Derby, 1½ mile (E.) from Matlock; containing 549 inhabitants.

Morning Jim/Thelma

Thanks for taking the time to consider my dilemma.

Unfortunately there was no church in Tansley until 1840, before that people used mainly Crich or Matlock, but could just have easily gone elsewhere.

I've finally found Derek's thread and handed it over to him.

Interestingly tho' an IGI search for just Anthony Holmes, 1800 +/- 5, in Derbyshire has thrown up another one born 1796 Wirksworth - seems likely that he's the one who married Hannah Gell and the folks with trees on Ancestry have got confused, or maybe I've read them wrong!

I studied this for some time and I cannot see how you could be wrong.
1861
Hannah Holmes abt 1798 Acton, Derbyshire, England Head Tansley, Derbyshire ( Aston on image)
Surely she must be;
HANNAH SHARDLOW - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 19 FEB 1797 Aston-On-Trent, Derby, England
I can see the confusion;
HANNAH GELL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 17 SEP 1797 Wirksworth, Derby, England
But she would be from Wirksworth on census.
I do not think there are many death records on family search.
You need burial records for Tansley.

I'm 'nudging' Derek who has Derbyshire records. Perhaps he can help.

Unfortunately I can only find 2 children, the youngest was born early 1837 so no birth certificate.

I agree about the marriage aged 21 or thereabouts and had considered the possibility that he had married both Hannah's, only having children with the 2nd. However I can't find any record of a death for Hannah 1.

I think that's why I'm so confused

Are there any other children born after 1837? If so the birth certificate would give Hannah's maiden name.

Is it possible that he married both Hannah's? I would have thought it more likely that he married around 1818 (in my experience most people married at around 21 years old although I realise that not everyone does).

Could he have married in 1818 and then again in 1828 if his first wife died?

Morning All
I’m hoping that someone more experienced than me can read through the following and tell me if they think my reasoning is sound.

My great x 3 grandfather Anthony Holmes (1797) from Tansley in Derbyshire was married to a Hannah ? (1797)

My problem is in determining which Hannah. IGI gives 2 possibilities
1) A marriage to Hannah Gell in 1818 in Wirksworth, Derbyshire – 6miles from Tansley
2) A marriage to Hannah Shardlow in 1828 in Duffield, Derbyshire – 15 miles from Tansley

Hannah ? lived until 1862. In 1851 she gives her birthplace as Shardlow but in 1861 it has changed to Aston (only 2 miles apart so probably not significant)

I have seen other trees on Ancestry showing Anthony as being married to Hannah Gell but my inclination is towards Hannah Shardlow for the following reasons

1) IGI has a baptism for Hannah S in Aston in 1797
2) The first child that I can find was born in 1834
3) One of the witnesses to the marriage of AH and HS was a George Peach, Anthony’s sister Sarah was married to a George Peach
4) Their daughter, also Hannah, married a George Shardlow – possibly a family connection

Many Thanks

Pam
