Just checking through your messages, thanks. As Dee pointed out I have had little success in finding this George and George Snr together. George Snr is stated as being a Newspaper Reporter on his son's marriage certificate but I am very dubious of this. I don't even know for sure if George Snr was actually registered as George at birth. There are so many things that could be wrong about the certificate but this is all I have to go on. Without George jnr. exact date of birth I cannot proceed as it would just be guess work.
I realise you are giving up your time very kindly to help me in my search and I do appreciate it greatly. I have been trying unsuccessfully to get further back with my tree for about four of five years now but to no avail.

Hi Ricochet,

I had a quick look at the other posts.............

None found with George as the father. Apparently George Snr was a Newspaper Reporter, however as you and I both know often the occupations were "bumpfed" up........

Lucy has had little response really with her postings, I suppose the surname may have been mistranscribed into many forms???

Was there an occupation recorded for the father on the marriage cert?

Or was he, by chance, 'deceased'?

What info was found on your other thread? I, for one, don't want to use up time looking for that which has already been found and given to you.........

Thanks once again for your help.
I have his marriage certificate and he was married at the age of 21 in 1912. His father's name is given as George Keetch also, but when I have tried to look them both up on the census they do not appear together. I have found two George Keetch (age 9/10) on 1901 census but neither have a father named George.
I pressume they were all born in London.
Yes, I have posted another thread looking for the same man. I was hoping to get some more info from his medals card as I've tried every other way I can think of.
You are all so kind in helping out, thanks again.

Have you asked about this man on another thread?

Or is another GR member researching the same man?

If all you want is his DOB, start by obtaining his marriage cert, which will have his age....and his father's details.

Then look for him on a census, to find his birthplace, and check freebmd for a birth reg'n.

No military records for him on Ancestry - apart, of course, from the Medal Card

His military records, if they've survived - lots didn't- will be on Ancestry. They won't give date of birth though, but will give at least the year and in some cases will give an idea of the month, i.e. they might say he was 20 years and 5 months when he enlisted in a particular month of 1916 for example.

Thanks everyone for your input, I will put all the info I have on the card below :-

George Keetch - Royal Garrison Artillery, Gunner regimental number 315227.
Territorial Force Royal Garrison Artillery 108 division. Page 716.
Won the Victory medal and the British Medal.

That is every bit of information on the medal card.
I really want to find his exact date of birth, is there anywhere I can look for his military records?

If you care to put his name etc on here, we can check if there is anything on Ancestry................

Thanks for the replies.
My great grandfather was in the Royal Garrison Artillery 108 battalion as a gunner (WW1) . He won the victory medal and the British medal. It states on his medal card page 716 (I don't know the relevance of this).

It's a bit hard to tell without details or seeing your great grandad medal card, but generally you can tell from a medal card whether the soldier served overseas, and if he saw active service or not, by his British War medal, Victory Medal entitlement. If he recieved any gallantry medals it is often possible to find more info on those via the announcement of their award in the London Gazette searchable online. If he got a SWB Silver War Badge this will indicate he was either invalided out sick or wounded or retired on grounds of age before end of the war.

The figures after the Medals he recieved are the references for his entry on the Medal Rolls. These are at Kew, and sometimes, though not always, give Battalion or unit, which will open up the possibilities of finding and tracing the battalions movements during the war, through war diaries etc.

Ultimately though nothing will replace having his service records, though sadly 70% of these were destroyed in WWII Bombing. You might get lucky though.

(I'm assuming here g-grandad was from the ranks...if he was an officer his service records far more likely to exist)

Was this WW1?

Was he in the Army?

I have got the records of my great grandfathers war medals and his rank. Is there any way I can find out any more details about him from this?
