Always worth tweaking your search, looking for alternative spellings.

Personally I've found ancestry better than GR for the census's (haven't used find my past and there's another one that uses better quailty fiche to scan from making it more readable and they allow you to search for families without a surname, can't remeber the name of it though), as they look for mis-spellings that could be the person you are search for, also if they are proving really awarkward but you are pretty sure of the enumeration district they are in then ancestry allows you to look through each area page by page, or select the area then limit the search by year of birth, this is how I found on lot of 'missing relatives. The other thing is I took the time out to add the 'alternative' name to the records so if anyone else tries finding them searching for the surname spelt the standard way will bring them up. So an ancestry you also get the benfit of others input, so someone it may have taken someone else hours/days to find you can find in seconds.

Thanks for responses.The family in question,1891,is :

Head,John Phillips,c1844,Dorset.
Wife,Mary/Mercy Phillips,c1833,Dorset/Somerset.
Mary's daughter,Elizabeth Jeffery,c1870,Dorset.
Mary's grandson [Elizabeths son]Samuel George Jeffery,b1886,Dorset.
[Possibility that Elizabeth was deceased 1891]

1881 census shows John,Mary & Elizabeth,Crewkerne Somerset.
1901 census shows John,Mary/Mercy & Samuel George,Glamorgan.[Samuel incorrectly transcribed as Sarah J on at least one 1901site].

Cheers,

Shirley.

From experience I can say that the quality of the transcripts on the 1901 Census on-line, the original Government run site, now managed by GR, is far better than Ancesty's

I am not sure that that information is available.
Ancestry is different to Findmypast.
Ancestry have a list of missing parts.
You could look for the rest of your life.
It is a fact that people missed the census.

The majority of "missing" entries are due to mis spellings, and we can usually find them by playing around with the wild card searches.
There are a few that can only be found on one or other site, if you put the details up we can look for you.

Hi Shirley

Most sites do carry out their own transcriptions so if you can't find your family on one site, it is always worth trying another. Or you could ask for a lookup on another site to save buying credits just for one lookup.

I am fairly new to genealogy research, but note that several subscription sites have a transcription of the same eg.1891 census.

My question is : Is transcribed data being shared,or is each site carrying out its own transcription ? Another way of asking the question is :If an error [eg.missing family]happened to occur on one site, should I check other sites in the hope that the same error has not occurred ?

Is there any data available to indicate if the original records for the 1891 census in a particular county are known to be incomplete, damaged etc. ? Thinking particularly of Dorset,Somerset and Glamorgan.

Would appreciate some input.

Shirley.
