Thank you so much for the further information Rachele. I intend to ring Newham Council tomorrow.

I've had a look at the website information that you gave to me too which I found very interesting, especially the photos of Aldersbrook and also some of the other children in workhouse schools.

Thank you once again!

I've given you the wrong spelling Hilary, it is called Aldersbrook Receiving Homes, built in 1910 by West Ham Guardians before being taken over by East Ham County Borough in the 1930's, so hopefully there should be some records on your Mother. I think the council is now either called Newham or Waltham Forest.

Do have a look at this website:- www.workhouses.org.uk it shows a number of photos and a plan of Aldersbrook Homes

There are two archives where you might find furthur info:-
Waltham Forest Archives, Vestry House Museum, Vestry Road, Walthamstow, London E17 9NH [email protected]
and
Newham Archives & Local Studies Library, Stratford Library, 3 The Grove, London E15 1EL

If I can help you any furthur please let me know, I have always had a special interest in Aldersbrook

There was an Orphanage/ Children's Home in that area , I believe it was part of the West Ham Union. It was called Aldersbrooke. There is a lot of detail, photograps etc on the wonderful Workhouse site.....can't remember that address but I'm sure someone will oblige
Good luck

My late mother (Lilian Ruby Francis) was placed in a London orphange sometime after 1932 and was then evacuated to Cornwall during the 2nd world war. I am trying to find her placement records and have written to Barnardos but they are unable to trace her.

In the early 1970s, my Mum actually visited the orphanage and I sat in the car whilst she went in but I was only 11 years old and can't remember exactly where it was other than the London area. However, I do remember her mentioning Forest Gate quite a bit so I am beginning my further searches in this area.

Just wondering if anyone has experience of trying to do the same in this area or whether there was a national register for children placed in orphanages?

If anyone has any tips, I'd be very grateful to hear about them as I don't know where to start since Barnardos can't help.

Thank you
Hilary
