To find out about war casualties try the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website

www.cwgc.org

You can search by surname or by surname and first name / initials. The site often gives interesting info such as the battles which took place near certain cemeteries etc.

Of course, your direct ancestors may not have been war casualties, but often their siblings may have been.

First World War Army Records

These are the records which are on Ancestry which is a subscription site.

Service Records
Pension records
Medal cards
But note over 70% of these records were destroyed in WW2 so it always a bit of luck if those you are looking for have survived

World War two records

None of these records are online, they are still held by the MOD, to obtain these records you have to be NOK, related etc or have permission from NOK.I am putting on the link which explains all

Hi

I'm quite new to this, so apologies if this question has been asked before. I have just started tracing my tree, and am back to the mid-1800's. I'd like to start finding out about what roles my ancestors had in both WW1 and WW2.
Are there sites that store this sort of information? Unfortunately, I have very few living relatives, so am unable to trace information on word-of-mouth.

Hope you can help

Kev.
