Have you taken into account the fact that only paying members can instigate contact?
Over ten million members. I hope someone is clever enough to find out how many actually pay.

well I am pleased to say I have had a stack of brilliant hot matches - my Breakspears have the most - and one of my hot matches actually travelled down here to Cardiff from Essex just to meet a member of the Breakspear clan!!!

Had one recently with my Great Grandfather - a Williams, which was a total shock, being it was Williams in Wales!!

Gemma:
I agree with you as I had that problem..opening my tree and then no more words from them !!

In the past I've had some great matches via hot matches, but after i uploaded my new tree they all disappeared.

Thanks to this thread ive realised that somehow i had blocked them (i didnt even know this was possible!)

I've now unblocked them so hopefully i'll be getting some soon!

On a related note, one thing that does annoy me is when people contact me saying that we have 10+ names that match. When i state that i wont open my tree to them, but am quite willing to share any information on our common ancestors, i never hear from them again.

I guess some people want the easy option of just copying other peoples trees, rather than having a conversation with a relative!

Have just checked my "Hot Matches". A new one, allegedly someone I have not previously contacted is my 2nd cousin. We found each other on GR in 2007. Errh?

As far as I know you neither sign up nor can block Hot Matches. The process runs automatically. What you can do is to opt out of receiving an email from GR telling you you have some more.

The sysem processes 100 entries a time from each tree so just because you see a match with John Smith in member x's tree, doesn't mean that they see the same match with you. In time they should, but you have no idea of knowing when this will be.

Because you get to a point where you know you probably have more information than the other person has to offer. Selfish I know but I am getting a bit fed up with how some people contact me, are happy to view my tree but when I look at theirs there is next to nothing on it. One such person has offered to send his Gedcom file to me which means all the names (two lots of families apparently) that I am interested in bar one family member which is the hot match, are not on the GR tree at all.

By the way, I am still waiting (about 5 days now)!

I've blocked 'hot matches'........mainly because I found them utterly ridiculous.

I suspect many other people do the same.

I have a lots of problems with my hot matches as they are all " N/K " , such a waste of time to put them on !!

I love my Hot Matches and have made some very good contacts through them. I think the fact that I am quick to make contact with those I think are useful, precludes them from contacting me. Too quick for my own good maybe!!

Hi Pauline, I too have had this problem and i do contact these hot matches, but i feel that i'm doing all the running, and don't think i'll bother in future, i too have asked GR for an answer but i still havn't had a responce . Happy hunting. Regards Angelina.

Not everyone signs up for hot matches. I don't, partly due to the huge frustration of lots of matches of names but not places as hot matches are sometimes luke warm at best. If I am stuck with info on a branch of my tree I tend to use "Search Trees" and only contact people if I am fairly sure there is a match. This won't stop them appearing as hot matches on your list, but they won't know about you.

Maybe the people that you do match with don't bother to send messages? I must admit that I only glance at my hot matches and delete most of them without contacting anyone.

I wonder if anyone else feels this is odd....How come G.R always send Hot Matches for me to make a contact ? and I never get a contact,.....I am sure I must be someones hot match too! I do send messages in case I match with someone but I thought this was odd :( I have asked G.R no result yet.
