There's one general way - try looking the place up in Lewis.
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/source.aspx?pubid=445
Course, for Liverpool, there's a large chunk of text, but it does say Liverpool was a chapelry in Walton parish until 1698, when it became a parish, and names "the parochial chapel of St. Nicholas".

There's another way possible here, since you've got an m.cert, and it's Liverpool. Look up the marr at:
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/cgi/marrind.cgi
Presumably you'll find something like:

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1853
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
SMITH John SCOTSON Hannah Liverpool, Our Lady & St. Nicholas & St. Anne Liverpool 2053LP/27/379

Kathleen is correct. St Nicks can be found on www.lan-opc.org.uk where you can find all entries (not all years transcribed)

According to Wikipedia:-

The Church of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas is the parish church of Liverpool. The site is said to have been a place of worship since at least 1257. The church is situated close to the River Mersey near the Pier Head. The Chapel of St Nicholas (Patron Saint of Sailors) was built on the site of St Mary del Quay which was considered too small for the growing borough of Liverpool in 1356. It is a Grade II listed building[1] and an active parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Liverpool and the deanery of Liverpool North.
