I have been trying to trace my uncle, James Norton, Born 21st March 1913 (Birmingham UK), he was a Merchant Seaman our family lost contact with him after the 2nd world war. After making an attempt to trace the rest of my family i came across a James Norton who died in Bournemouth UK, death was registered jan/Feb/Mar 1983, i sent for the death certificate and it is my uncle. details are James Norton, DOB.B 21/03/1913, Merchant Seaman address 17 Norwich avenue Bournemouth, Died 26/12/1982 in Royal Victoria Hospital Bournemouth. The informant is a Gareth Jenkins Qualification Occupier Usual address Royal Victoria Hospital Bournemouth. Does this mean my uncle had no one to register his death (someone at the hospital did it ?) How can i find if he had a family, who else lived at the address with him, if anyone at all did. please help as i do not want to leave it here now i have got this far.

He could have had family. Seeing your post has reminded me that my grandfather's death was registered by someone in the hospital where he died, with the qualification "occupier".

You could try writing a letter for publication in the local paper first of all.

And you could contact the bereavement services department at Bournemouth Council.

Hi,

I know it is quite a few years back, but I would try contacting the hospital.
If he was still alive when he reached there, he may have given names who to contact? I am sure someone there would tell you what you need to do to get this information. Whether they give you the information is another thing! If a member of the hospital actually registered the death it does look as though there were no relatives to contact at that time. Maybe someone got in touch with the hospital after?

My aunt died in a Mental Institution in Surrey, it wasn't until an aunt and I got talking about her that I decided to try and find her. I contacted my Doctors Surgery and they gave me a list of all the places in Surrey. I just kept ringing all the places until I found the where she was (this was in 1985 I hasten to add) She spent 60 odd years of her life in that Institution and died there just 3 months before I found where she was.
I had a letter from the hospital Doctor telling me the cause of death, when she died and where she is buried.
I know we have moved on quite a lot since the late 80's but its worth a shot in my opinion.

I wish you the best of luck
Rose
