Well in view of the current government debacle it was rather tongue in cheek, but doesn`t it then call into question the English decision to release the 1911 census which carries the same 100 year cut off ?
Perhaps the English government decided that the needs of the many outweighed the needs of the few, unlike our lot who are still trying to encourage us to eat haggis and wear kilts!

I do understand holding information for 100 years but what is the reason for this rule?
To protect the privacy of the people recorded by the Census, some of whom will still be alive. People who completed the 1911 Census were promised confidentiality.

OOOPS !!!!!

If they are sticking to that promise, they will have to use the delete button as in 22 months there will still be around 2000 Scotish people over the age of 100.
Of course they could always just put it back a few years..........Och Aye

Isn`t it wonderful our government care so much about privacy in Scotland that they wish to ensure we do not probe our ancestors "secrets" for another 22 months!
That of course means that around 2000 people over the age of 98 can sleep soundly in the knowledge that we won`t know what they did, where they lived or who they lived with at the age of six months + approx !!!???
Why.........in case we don`t fill in our own census forms for future governments to decide how much information we will not be privy to!

C'est la vie n'est-pas.

Frank.

1911 SCOTTISH CENSUS

The position in Scotland regarding access to the 1911 Census differs from that in England and Wales. The Census in Scotland is devolved to the Scottish Parliament and Administration. Scottish legislation (Section 38 and 58 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002) exempts personal Census records from disclosure until after a 100 year closure period.

So, while 1911 Census information for England and Wales is being made available, the same does not apply to information in the Scottish 1911 Census.

The Registrar General for Scotland believes that this strikes a balance between the interest of the records to family historians and the privacy of the people recorded by the Census, some of whom will still be alive. People who completed the 1911 Census were promised confidentiality. Although that is a long time ago, it is important not to call into question the validity of the equivalent promise on modern Census forms. That could deter people from filling in the Census form, reducing the response rate and making the Census results (which are so important for many aspects of Scottish life) less accurate.

The Registrar General for Scotland plans to release the Scottish 1911 Census information just after the date of the 2011 Census (27 March 2011), by which time the 100 year closure period will have ended.
