Hi Christopher
Just as a follow on from another 'Janet' with reference to the Lancashire connection. In the Oxford book of names it does say that there are variation of Tattersall, Tattershall,Tattershaw, Tatttersill,Tettersell Tetshall. It goes on to say that it has been comman in Lancashire from an early period. It may be from the same group so possibly a Lancastrian name.-JLe

Christopher - have had a look on the surname info bit of Ancestry (now Helen has reminded me how to find it!) There is no meaning given but the 1891 map shows a strong concentration of Tattersons in Lancs, Yorks and Cheshire if that helps. There are a fair few in Co. Durham too, and also a very strong concentration of Tatersons (one T) in that county. However, I should point out that it only shows England and Wales.
Do you have any other possible variants of your surname?
