Are there any military historians that can help??

Have just received the WW2 service records for my grandfather.

On the forms relating to his discharge it states

Johannes Nicholas Rudolf Venter MM which I assume means he was awarded the Military Medal.

This notation is also in his Officers Release book from 1946. And my grandmother used to have the medal in her possession until the late 1950's, when it was stolen.

However on the form that lists all the campaigns, promotions, etc there is a box that should list all his medals and honours and where the Military Medal should be noted there is an area that has been covered up (along with several other areas on the form).

In the same batch of papers I received a form for a Cyril Hallowes Robinson (Why, I don't know!!) who also received the Military Medal - his honours had not been blanked out.

I have two questions

1) Any idea why this information should have been blanked out? And is there any way of finding out about this medal if it appears to have been erased from his records?

2) On the form it says my grandfather was mentioned in despatches and gives a London Gazette number - can I view this anywhere and will that give any more information than the service record.

Actually, that was three questions!! Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

PS If there are any relatives of Cyril Hallowes Robinson, born Ladysmith, Natal - occupation prior to the war Mine Inspector - then let me know and I'll send you the pages I have.
