this site has historical directories, you may find what you are looking for

alternatively you might be able to access a selection of 19th C newspapers (digitized) and the Times online archive via your local libraries web site from home, I can access via Bucks CC Libraries site, just need my library card number, one of them might hold an advertisement for the shop

I am doing some research for an elderly friend and I have pre warned him that handed down family stories are sometimes rubbished. He said that his grandfather made furniture and had a shop/store selling furniture and antiques in the Hackney/Poplar/surrounding area in the late 1800s right up to the middle of the 1900s.

Is there any site that would tell me if such a shop existed in this area?
