Back again,
Whilst replying to you Linda I see you have given me even more names to go at. I can discount three of them as Bernard is my dad's brother, and the two Mills boys his cousins, other than that some interesting names to have a look at. Thanks again for looking for me Linda, do appreciate it.
I'll be back - Karen.

I did an edit and added some later births

Thanks Linda,
That's certainly her birth, thanks for the leads on those two births, as you say could be a bit too soon after 1911, but can't rule them out ( I have come across some relatives who's parents only made it to the altar very shortly before their birth!!). Isn't it a devil, I had put Ethel to one side thinking she had demised young then up she pops and starts me off all over again, seeing that she was my dad's Aunt and all other Aunts and Uncles he talked about wonder if Ethel was a black sheep?
If you come up with anything else I'd be pleased to know and will take a look at those births you found.
Bye for now Karen

I can't see an obvious marriage, but if she stayed in the Kings Norton registration district, you could try looking for births with mothers maiden name Halfored, then cross referencing the marriages

The first two I can see are

Name: Frances A Jones

Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Mother's Maiden Name: Halford

and
Albert J Marshall 1912 Apr-May-Jun Kings Norton (To 1912) Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire

they are in 1912, which is probably too early if she was single in 1911

If there is more than one birth to the surname I have tried to copy the earliest one I can see. There are probably some more names if you look.

I will leave it to you to see if you can match up any marriages. Of course if she moved out of the area, you are back to square one

This is the correct registration district for her birth

Name: Ethel Halford
Year of Registration: 1888
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Kings Norton (To 1912)
County: Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire
Volume: 6c
Page: 433

a census would say she was born in 1889

I've received so much help from you kind folk with my "mysteries" so thought I'd give this one a go. My grandma's eldest sister ETHEL HALFORD born 1889ish, Smethwick Staffs, parents William and Emily Halford, listed on 1891 census. I couldn't find Ethel after that at all, thought she must have died as a child, then whilst searching for marriages etc of a generation before, found Ethel aged 12 on 1901 census living with her Aunt Emma Jesson (husband David Jesson), Emma is Williams sister formerly Emma Halford, decided to go one step further and have found Ethel still living with Emma and family aged 22 on the 1911 census. My mystery is what became of her, I know either from family memories or research about my grans other siblings but Ethel is a complete mystery, having never even known of her until my research began. I have looked at the marriages after 1911 as far as I can and can't locate a marriage, or likewise a death, so can anyone with a bit of time to spare see if they can come up with Ethel after 1911 for me please? By the way in my searches for Halfords, have found the name transcribed as Alford, Allford, Holford, Dalford and have tried lots of variations on these themes. I'll be around for a while whilst I make a cuppa and do some boring housework. Thanks all Karen.
