Does anyone have any ideas on where I might start looking for WW1 medals. My grt grandfather was sent the medal his son earnt in the war as he was killed in action. We believe that he then sold them. Any idea where I should be looking?

are you sure the medal was issued?
we had a similar story, thinking my father in laws WW2 medals had been sold by his family, but I wrote to the medal office (I think, sorry it was a long time ago) and they confirmed the medals had never been issued and we now have them, you could try googling medal office and see what comes up

Why not create a standing search on Ebay. It only needs a few key words like the surname of the person you are interested in and the word medal. In the event of an item coming up for sale there with those two keywords, then Ebay will automatically send you an email advising you of the sale.

I have obtained several medals of people in my tree like this.

With so many medals on the market, it's sad to think what was once a cherished and proud possession of a World War veteran was only viewed by descenents of the family in terms of monetary value only when they sold them.

I agree wholeheartedly. It is heartbreaking browsing on Ebay or watching tv programmes such as Cash In The Attic and seeing people selling their ancestors medals. I would be proud to have such items and would not contemplate selling them. I think these people may live to regret their decision if they later develop an interest in their family history as they will then come to realise how important these medals were.

Setting up the automatic search is a brilliant idea. I think I will do that myself. Thanks for the suggestion.
