Can anyone advise the easiest family tree software to use.

It's very much personal preference.
Try a few free ones, on here, or PAF5 or Google and see what pops up.

Tetley try the free PAF (Personal Ancestral File) from:

http://www.familysearch.org/

You just download it to your computer, it is very easy to use and I used it for years when I first started (I recall I didn't have broadband then and it took 45 mins to download-now it will take seconds). If you put your tree on it you can print trees etc and also use GEDCOM to transfer the tree to GR or to another Tree Maker if you decide to change

The only reason I changed to Family Tree Maker which is also very good is because there was a good offer on with 3 mths free ancestry.
