Finding Marriage Partners

Calling all you experts. How does one go about finding marriage partners ? On the FreeBMD its fine for 1915 onwards but before that how do you marry one to the other? Why I am asking is in the 1911 census there was a Sidney Arthur Wright who was a cousin to the head of the household,Leonard Williams(my grandfather). This came as a complete surprise to me as this is a part of the family I did not know about. I assume that it must have been a sisters child who was boarding there. Its the same when you have the male side of the family who marries and you only have the females christian name. How do you find it out?
Many thanks

Kate

If I was looking for Sidney's mum, I think the first thing I would do is try to identify all of the aunts that Leonard had on both sides of the family. (With you saying it must be a sister's child, I'm guessing that Leonard is young enough to still be living with his parents). From there, I would try to identify - where possible (admittedly, with a name like White it won't be easy) - all the likely marriages for these sisters and see if any of them could have married a Mr. White.

Do you have any possible names for aunts of Leonard, or a birthplace place for Sidney Arthur?

following on from Kate's point, if you note place / date of birth on earlier censuses while the sisters are still single, then identify possible marriages, you can then see if any of the places/dates of birth match with the new surname and spouse

ordering the birth cert would confirm fathers and mothers names

I do buy the certs of all my direct lines - but use census info and free sites to work out relationships of some of the siblings etc.

I don't often research the siblings but sometimes you find yourself going off down a bit of a branch, meandering along a twig or two and then sitting on a leaf (and waiting until autumn!)

Researching sibs does have its uses though as on two occasions now it's helped me work out how two pairs of my direct ancestors must have met so that helped add a "human feel" to their story.

Don't forget Familysearch - FreeReg is filling up and is more and more useful. Lots of counties have some info on line - Norfolk is good, Herts have some stuff/an index, Medway Council in Kent and I gather Lancashire has lots on line. So always check out the county info as well.

Plus, if you add the siblings to your tree on here you might get a few more hits and a bit more info!

Thanks to all you guys. I did not explain this very well did I? Leonard Williams was born in Hereford in 1878. Where's Closh Occle? Sidney was also born in Hereford in 1895. According to the 1881 Census Leonards sisters were:-
Lucy born 1869,Annie born 1873, Annie J born 1875,Emily E born 1876,
Agnes E born 1879, Charlotte born 1881. They were all born in Hereford.
I wish I was as good as you all are . Sometimes I feel really stupid. Mind you I am better than I used to be

As a point of interest, in 1881 the next-door neighbours of the Williams family were a family by the name of WRIGHT

Hi Elaine

http://noah.norfolk.gov.uk/

This is a great site - I've found wills, the odd photo, snippets of info - it's brilliant.

Don't forget FreeREG - they have quite a few Norfolk parishes on there now and that's helped me a great deal with one bunch of my Norfolk lot.
