Kate, thankyou for the info, that may seem the best route forward (Upholland), it seems the closest match! I think I had seen that somewhere but disregarded it for some reason I now can't recall! Thank you all again who have helped in this, it is appreciated

And I don't know why people have deleted their notes???!

Please remember that ages on the 1841 Census are all out by several years sometimes. You're better off working from an 1851 Census age, if you're lucky enough to have one.

On the Lancs online parish clerk site is this (I have rewritten it as against copying and pasting to see if I can make any sense of it):

First James . . .
James Gaskel b. 13 Mar 1809, chr. 30 Mar 1809 New Chapel, Baldwin Street, St. Helens to Richd. Gaskell and Ellen of Burtonwood

Next one . . .
James Gaskel b. 21 Mar 1810 chr 15 Apr 1811 Douglas Chapel, Eccleston to Rd. Gaskel and Ann of Up-holland

So it looks to me as though there were at least two Richards with sons called James, but looking at the map Upholland is between Skelmersdale and Wigan whereas Burtonwood is a good 6-8 miles to the south of Wigan and is closer to St. Helens.

There's this one in Upholland on BVRI but father's name is James:

Christening Date: 17 Sep 1815 Recorded in: Upholland, Lancashire, England
Father: James GASKELL
Mother: Sarah
Source: FHL Film 1469059 Dates: 1735 - 1815

Hi Nicola

Didn't read your thread until evryone deleted their entries - wonder why?

Yes, before 1837 it becomes guesswork. Unless there is only one Richard Gaskell in Shevington at the right time, you have to just choose one, assuming you have bought certificates of the child nearest to 1837. There is a faint hope that old dad or man will turn up with the family in 1851 say, so you have a better chance of going back correctly, but otherwise no real chance of proof.

Prior to 1837 we just have to make assumptions.

thanking people for all their offers of info, but going back to my original query, how do you firmly establish familial links pre - census? Does it all come down to a bit of detective work and "best guess" fits?

Thank you all, yes it is the James that married Ellen, everything from 1837 onwards I have, I just cannot reconcile the fact that his age given on the 1841 census puts his birth date between 1811-1816, and his birth place given as Upholland on suceeding census, but cannot find a James, born to a Richard in that time.... oops, almost forgot, he is NOT the James in Ormskirk, he lived in and around Shevington till his death (possibly 1868)

Luckily my ancestor James Gaskell married in 1837 so i have his certificate. It gives his fathers name as Richard. Therefore James was living with his own wife and family in the 1841 census, not his parents. I have an area of birth for James but cannot seem to find him in OPC records for the right date (Between 1811-1816, working on age given in 1841 census), with a Richard as father. I am seemingly unable to establish a direct connection.... Any tips or advice????

PS, Gaskell is a VERY common name in the Wigan area!!! :)

Thanking you all
