Hi everyone,
Can any of you learned people out there tell me what a reformitory school ship was, and why someone would be sent to one.I believe the ACBAR was at Liverpool.
All i know is, that the persons father that was sent there, was given a fine by the courts for not paying for his sons upkeep.
Thanks in advance
Chris.

Dear Christopher

A reformatory school was simply an institution for the industrial training of Juvenile Offenders.

They were given clothing, food and lodgings whilst given training.

The Akbar was a reformatory school ship moored in the River Mersey in the 19th century. Boys were sent to the Akbar for training after serving short prison sentences for committing crimes. It was hoped that the training they received on board ship would help to reform their character. This is why the Akbar was called a ‘reformatory’ ship.
