Hello each, does anyone out there know of a good site (from experience preferabley) where I can get help in obtaining copies of my Grt uncles wedding cert. He was a serving British soldier in France in 1917, and married a local girl. He stayed in France after the war, The GRO at Southport could'nt find his record. I can't speak French and was wondering how I proceed from here. Any experience of this folks?

Googled and found this on familytreeforum:

"THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP. I HAVE FOUND A WEBSITE FOR FRENCH GENEALOGY.
Généalogie : recherchez vos ancêtres, publiez votre généalogie, consultez l'état-civil ... - GeneaNet. It starts off in French but if you click on the first flag (Australian ?) in the row on the top right of the page you get English. Click on any other flag and you get the appropriate language.
It's a bit fiddly at first but once you are used to it there is quite a bit of info before you have to pay anything !

French certificates are held locally so you need to know where he married

Thanks 'Potty' but having tried 3 times with your french address--without luck, I gave up. maybe I kept getting the address wrong--BUT BOY--thats a long and complicated one. Do you have to have those comma things the french have above certain letters? Cheers!
