Somerset Girl thank you so much for taking the time to digest everything.
I think Mary automatically wrote Alexander and did not correct it.

I have the death certificate for Alexander, he died due to severe burns received accidentally, there was an inquest 2 days later.

Thank you so much

Hi, Is there someone that has the time to study these census records and to agree or disagree with what I think may have happened here. I have been trying to find son Alexander who
suddenly appeared on the 1881 census but I do not think he existed.

The great Portland Rose found these details for me
1861 census
Alexander Lindsay age 31 born abt 1830 Ireland
Spouse Mary
civil Parish Plumstead Kent
Regn Dist Lewisham
Sub Dist. Plumstead

Household Alexander 31, Ellen 5, Margaret 3, Mary 27, Samuel 1

1841 census
Samuel LENZER age 12 abt 1859 (name misspelled)
Mother Mary
Father Alexander
Born Woolwich Kent
Sub Dist. Woolwich Dockyard

Household members Alexander 32, Ellyn 5, Margaret 3, Mary 27, Samuel 1

1881 census
Mary Lindsay 48 abt 1833
Relation Head
Born Ireland
Civil Parish Woolwich 14 Mount Street
Sub Dist. Woolwich Arsenal
Widow

Household members Alexander 21, Mary 48, Samuel 14

Think Ellen/Ellyn was born Elinor as its the only one I have found.

After many months of trying to find Alexander I left him alone and went on to someone else. Only this morning did I sit and take a good look at the details trying to see what was wrong.

The 1871 census I think it should show Patrick as being 4 and not 11, maybe enumerators writing?

I think Mary made a mistake on the 1881. She lost her husband the previous year and I think she put his name without realising.
Think it should be Samuel 21, Patrick 14

I shall be most grateful for your comments, as trying to find Alexander has been most trying to say the least. I may be
very wrong of course.

Many thanks
Rose
