Interesting - according to a 2002 road map I found, Little Marlow is about 6 miles to the east of the Buckinghamshire.Oxfordshire border, and the start of the river Thames (on this map, it is listed as "Thames or Isis") runs level with the current Bucks/Windsor and Maidenhead border.

But I suppose Windsor and Maidenhead is a new county - Berkshire might be a good bet. The nearest big towns to Little Marlow now would seem to be High Wycombe, Slough and Maidenhead.

Kate............. Thank you. I searched the Richmond Parish records but no joy and the assistant there looked too. He isn't in any of the Surrey Parish records.
I think you are possibly right about neighbouring counties. I don't live in the area and am unsure as to what the county borders would have been in that time. Middlesex, Berkshire I have looked at but again no results.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Did you managed to follow up the submitted IGI entry to see if there was a baptism record for a parish in or around Richmond that matched up with him? I would be tempted to follow it up if you haven't already - sometimes submitted entries can be copied down from parish records (but, of course, not all the time). He might have said he was "of the parish of Richmond" when he married (ie. living there at the time but not necessarily born there) and the person giving the information to the IGI has interpreted it to mean he was born there when he wasn't.

One thing occurs to me - could he have actually been born in a neighbouring county to Buckinghamshire? Or, is it possible that Little Marlow was on the county boundary and that Richard was actually born close by but not actually in Bucks?

I have posted in the past about my 4 x great grandfather but wondered whether anyone could advise me where to start looking.
I have no confirmation as to his birth as although the IGI in a submitted entry says he was born in Richmond Surrey in 1767 an indenture I saw at Richmond Local Studies last year stated he moved from Little Marlow in 1795 when he became head shepherd to King George 3rd at Kew.
I have his marriage details to Elizabeth Wade in Little Marlow Bucks in 1790 as Richard Standford.
He died the Ist June 1837 aged 72 according to Richmond Parish records.

A son William Stanford b1792 in Little Marlow is stated as being born in Weston, Bucks on 1851 census. I have found more information out about Wm.
Daughter Elizabeth b1795 also born in Little Marlow. I have no information for.

Contact with the Bucks FHS has not been successful as they have no birth record for Richard either Standford, Stanford or even Stamford.
Can anyone suggest where I might now look please. Do I need to look in adjoining counties such as Berkshire?

With having a link albeit as a worker for the Royal family is there anywhere around Marlow where he could have moved to with the Royal family at that time. I can add that the Royal Archives at Windsor also have no records as they were destroyed in a fire. Sorry for the long post but I don't know where to look now.
