While searching for Lancashire Will's online I think I've found a match, but before I go ahead and order it can anyone explain what the following means please =

"Archdeaconry of Richmond. Consistory Court (Amounderness Deanery)".

Thanks, Lou

Kate

Found this online which might help:

http://www.riponandleedsbells.org.uk/

I think, judging by what this site says, an archdeaconry is a subsection of one religious diocese (so presumably the diocese is run by the archbishop and the archdeaconry is run by a deacon, if my RE knowledge hasn't deserted me).

Based on the Richmond one, it looks like the diocese in this case is Ripon & Leeds, the archdeaconry of Richmond is a section within the diocese and the deanery is a smaller section of the archdeaconry. Could be a way of identifying an area by splitting it up into different church area-based groupings. (A bit like a church version of political boundaries, constituencies and wards.)

Hi Kate, Thank you very much for the info, it sounds rather complicated so thanks for enlightening me, but I am still confused...!!!

I found the Will on the online Lancashire site, the person lived and died in Lancashire so why would the diocese be Rippon & Leeds?

Regards, Lou

Hi, I think this link will answer your question - it appears that Lancashire use to have oversight as far afield as Yorkshire.

The whole of England is covered by the Church of England - there are two 'provinces' - York and Canterbury (they cover the North and South respectively).

These provinces are broken into 'dioceses' (about 50 I think).

The dioceses are broken down into Archdeaconries (usually 2 per diocese) and then the Archdeaconries are broken down into deaneries - how many depends on the size of the diocese.

Hope this helps.

Hi Cynthia, Thanks very much, that does help explain things more clearly. I've made a note of the site and will search through it.

Thanks again,

Lou

Hope this doesn't confuse you anymore than you are :-)

The only time I ever came across the word 'Amounderness' is in relation to a registration district around Preston Lancs.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Gerry
