GRO Mistakes

I recently ordered two certificates from the GRO believing that two of my anscestors were twins. Both Daniel and David Bown born in Gloucester in 1875 shared the same volume number and page number in the freebmd index. I checked the original scan which is quite clear and it showed a Daniel and David. I ordered Daniels first which arrived a couple of weeks ago and all was fine. I then ordered Davids and the exact same certificate has just turned up this morning! Looking at how the name is written though it is possible to read both David or Daniel. Is it possible a mistake was made when the information was recorded? I have been able to trace what happened to Daniel but I havent found anything relating to David...
Cheers

I would have thought the most likely thing would be that the transcribers have read the registration differently - you do see multiple entries on freebmd sometimes, with slightly different spellings but obviously the same person.
Might be worth contacting freebmd and offering a correction.
Not sure if time of birth put for twins back then - someone else might know?
Also, have you tried looking for a baptism record? Might be possible to see if there is just David, or also a David and Daniel!

Have you managed to find Daniel on 1881 census to see if a brother is recorded?

I thought perhaps it was a transcription error at first but the original image that freebmd provides does show a Daniel and a David Bown born in Gloucester. Neither of them show up on any census records as Glitter Baby has shown in the previous post Daniel died in 1877. There is no record of a David Bown in the index either.

You could ring the GRO to ask them to check it -

I would ask for a refund. You have asked for a cert. for David and not been given it. It may turn out that there are two certs. after all.Or not as the case may be.

I thought if the name was not correct GRO didn't send out the certificate. are they seeing Daniel as David then? As Jim says i would query it and ask for a refund.
