If you have a local studies library they should have some parish records or the countyrecords office for the town/ county you are researcng

Familysearch.org has some records

If you try the pilot search on this site it now has the records which were on the British Isles Vital records discs This site allows to to look at records for some other countries as well
The online parish project may be of some use to you but not all counties are covered

Freereg has parish record transcriptions. Also, try googling for the areas you are interested in, adding parish records to the search criteria

Essex County Council has recently added a lot on new digitised images of parish registers to their site.

For anyone with Essex interests the ste is;

http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/default.asp

Just click on the images button and enter the name of the parish and the word register to check if registers are available online. Omitting the keyword register will list all documents for that parish that are viewable online, wills, electoral lists etc.

It's likely with the passage of time that most records offices will have online document viewing.

Which counties and dates are you interested in?

Apart from the IGI which is your obvious starting point, there are many local projects which have details, often at a county level. For example I use the Lanacashire On-line Parish project exetensively for my wife's connections in Southport.

If you can be a bit more specific then I'm sure there are members who can advise.

Also have a look at the IGI Tutorial thread on how to get the best from that site.
