Hi all, I can't make our the surname on the 1891 census and wondered if someone could look it up and let me know what it says please?

1891 RG 12 /2276 Folio 41; Page 36; GSU roll: 609738

Mary Onions b 1828 Tipton Staffordshire Head Wid
Mary ??????b 1852 Tipton Staffordshire Widow daughter ****
Eliza J Onions b 1861 Tipton, staffordshire, daughter
Elizabeth A Onions b 1864 Tipton, Staffordshire daughter.

On the census it says the surname of Mary b 1852 is Onions but on the actual image it states Mary junior is a widow - I can't read the surname but it doesn't look like Onions.

Just wondered what other people thought her surname was?

Thanks, Lou

It looks as if it starts with an "M". It doesn't look much like it but I wonder if it could be Merrall. There is this marriage:-

Name: Mary Jane Onions
Year of Registration: 1869
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Wolverhampton
County: Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands
Volume: 6b
Page: 897

Also on the page is a George Merrall.

Just a guess really.

I think it looks like Marden or Marten.

There is also this marriage in 1877 to a Mary Onions:-

Marriages Jun 1877
Mander Henry W. Bromwich 6b 958

Could possibly be Mander.

EDIT - On the 1881 census for Henry and Mary Mander, Mary gives her birthplace as Gloucestershire so this might not be the correct one.

Hi Kath & Blossom,

Thanks very much for taking the time to look for me, I really do appreciate it. Sorry it's taken a time for me to reply, I had a phone call and then the battery ran out of power.

I did think the first 3 letters were Mar and thought perhaps Markea or Marlea. Why didn't I think of Martin.......silly me. Thanks girls.

The marriage and death fit in, so thanks for all your help.

Many thanks, I shall now seek to get that marriage cert.

Thanks again, Lou
